Little Hands of Hope: noviembre 2011

Welcome, we have more exciting news!! We have received letters & pictures of the small school we are now hosting. We were so touched by this letter and the sweet pictures we only hope you will be too. Thank you for all your support!

Hello Lorena: My name is Marcelo and I am the Principal of the school you are sponsoring. I want to welcome you to the school and whish that your dreams of service and help may come true in the best possible way and that through that you might feel completely fulfilled.

I was barely able to open my email. Over here we have very limited services with the antenna we have available. I tried to send you some digital pictures as an attachment, which is what I know how to do, because I am not very versed in the use of Internet.

As you probably know, this is an elementary school with the number 988, and it is located in the Lot 127 of Paraje Pozo del Bayo, El Espinillo Jurisdiction. The school is located about 5 kilometers from this rural town in a territory which is property of the aboriginal ethnicity of the Toba. This area is known by the name of “Interfluvio” (Interfluves) and there are about 149,000 hectares that the Nation and the Chaco Province reciprocated to the original people as a Historical Reparation for having stripped them of their land during the Spanish Colonization. Even though it is inhabited by aborigines, there are a 40% of locals, but my school has the particularity of having 100% aboriginal students with the exception of my son Kevin, who is the only blond kid and who is 6 years old and attending 1^st grade in the same school.

Right now we have 55 students attending from 1^st to 7^th grade, plus about 25 children who attend Kindergarten, which an annex to the school, whose charge falls on the teacher Monica.

The teachers for this Primary School are: Marcelo Marchek, who is writing you, my wife Miriam Lilián, Marcelo Lavarenga, Dante Lucca and Carlos Sáez. This is a full session school because is operates from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Here the students are fed daily breakfast and lunch.

I have always looked for a way to help my students throughout my 22 years as a teacher, specially the students I have today, which could be socially and economically located under the poverty line, this is defined as basic needs not met. Everything we give them seems to be very little, but it would be worse not to help them alleviate, in a small way, their basic needs. They, themselves, might not know how needy they are because they don’t know anything beyond where they live, because they believe that the world is just like where they live. We believe that we can show them that there is a better world and there is a better quality of life that should be reachable by everyone.

The school lacks bathrooms and only has latrines (a hole in the ground without toilet sit), one for girls and one for boys. Sometimes they have to stand in line to get in. As you can imagine the smell is unbearable. They clean the latrines themselves several times a day because they are too many and the latrines get dirty quickly. The problem is that due to this unhealthy and lacking condition, the kids take off from the school, to the woods, to take care of their physiological needs, hidden in the woods, with the danger of being bitten by snakes, which are abundant in the area, and it might be even worse for the little kids from Kindergarten.

Well, it would take a long time to tell you about the problems and it would be overwhelming, but I believe that with very little we can do much, facing the problems with a practical view.

I have told my colleagues and the student about the good news. We are all very happy and with many expectations. Our students are very good and very respectful, very quiet; speak Spanish or Castilian only with the teacher, except the littlest ones who have not incorporated Spanish as their second language yet. With the arrival of the cell phones, they have learned to manage text messaging, which is very important. I have high school students whom I also support with school supplies and a small scholarship for the best performing female student.

Estimados amigos de APAER: Les escribo estas lineas para brindar una idea general de las características y realidad de nuestra institución.
                                           El E.E.P. Nº998 es una escuela primaria común ubicada en el Lote 127 de un Paraje rural llamado Pozo del Bayo, a unos 5km de un pueblito pequeño llamado El Espinillo, distante a 80km de la Ciudad de Juan Jusó Castelli, y 40 km de otro pueblo más cercano como es Villa Río Bermejito.
                                             Esta es una escuela netamente de alumnos aborigenes pertenecientes a la etnia Toba, ya que se encuentra en el corazón del Interfluvio, que es un territorio que pertenece al pueblo Toba. Digo interfluvio porque esta rodeado por ríos Teuco y Bermejito, al que llega atravezando dos puentes principales.
                                             Actualmente la población escolar se ha visto reducida notablemente por la migración de las familias al pueblo más cercano de El Espinillo, ya que al comienzo del año inscribimos unos 95 alumnos, de los cuales solo quedan 60 alumnos.
                                             Cuenta con un Jardín de Infantes que tambien tenía inscriptos 39 alumnos de 3años de edad, 4 y 5 años, de los cuales hay ahora solo 25 alumnos.
                                              La escuela es de Jornada Completa, es decir que funciona en el horario de 8,00 horas a 16,00 horas. Donde los niños reciben el servicio de Desayuno y Comedor. Son atendidos por 3 maestros de grado y el director quien suscribe que tambien tiene clase anexa. Este año la escuela cuenta todos los días con un maestro de materia especial, lunes y viernes música, martes educación física, miércoles plástica y jueves técnica agropecuaria.
                                              En cuanto a los alumnos les digo que son de extrema necesidad, desde lo más elemental. Puedo decir que se situn muy por debajo de la línea de pobreza. No obstante pertenecen la mitad de ellos al paraje de la escuela y otros parajes aledaños, y tambien al pueblito de el Espinillo a donde se mudaron pero aun muchos de ellos prefieren seguir concurriendo a nuestra escuela, porque es 100% aborigen y se encuentran más identificados. Ellos necesitan ropa, calzado y abrigo, sobre todo al comienzo del año para que puedan concurrir desde el primer día evitando así atrazo. En lo personal me interesa siempre trabajar para los niños exclusivamente, porque considero que en ellos, como educadores, centramos nuestra esperanza y en ellos está el futuro de nuestro país. Ellos no tienen la posibilidad de comprar sus útiles que usan en la escuela, así que pueden trabajar en clase en la medida que les proveamos los mismos. Ellos tienen una muy buena conducta, que de tener la posibilidad de conocerlos seguramente se llevarán una muy buena impresión, porque son muy buenos, callados y respetuosos, tambien muy sensibles y tímidos porque provienen de lugares muy remotos y asislados de contacto con personas de otros lugares. Este día del niños no pudimos entregarles juguetes, solo una pequeña bolsa de caramelos que pudimos conseguir. El Año pasado les sorteamos unos juguetes usados que recibimos en donación, justo ese día pasaba frente de la escuela Facundo Arana y se detuvo a acompañarnos en el sorteo y saludar a los chicos.
                                                Los maestros somos: quien les escribe, Marcelo Andrés, mi esposa Miriam, Dante, Marcelo Ramón, Carlos y la Maestra del Jardín Mónica. Conformamos un grupo de docentes muy unido, en donde hay muy abuena honda, compañerismo, trabajo en equipo y mucho respeto y amor por nuestros alumnos.
                                                Desde mediados del año pasado llegó la energía eléctrica a la escuela despues de incontables gestiones. La mayor parte de la instalación la hice yo porque tengo conocimientos del tema, y así pusimos a funcionar una heladera donada por APAER en el año 2009. Ahora llegó la televisión digital con un programa del gobierno nacional.
                                                El edificio escolar data del año 1986 y nunca fue refaccionado, pero solo necesitaría pintura, arreglo de visagras y cerraduras, vidrios y recambio de canaletas para juntar agua en los 2 aljibes. Aqui el agua es muy importante y nuestros aljibes son utilizados por toda la comunidad.
                                                 El salón del Jardín de Infantes se encuentra en muy malas condiciones, pero como la construcción es sólida con una buena refacción quedaría bien. Se necesita cambiar las chapas y un tirante del techo, colocar cieloraso de machimbre, pintura de paredes (revoque no), cambiar tres ventanas y la puerta, reparar el piso agregando mosaicos o cerámica.
                                                 A toda persona o instituciones que deseen colaborar con nosotros les decimos que no los vamos a defraudar, que el panorama que aquí les brindo es real, que serán bienvenidos y aceptados como parte de nuestro equipo.
